Why wildfires are a danger to my health

Wildfires produce huge plumes of smoke and gases that are annoying and harmful to our health. The small particles, in the range of 2.5 microns produced by wildfires, are of the greatest concern. To compare this size, a human hair is about 50 -70 microns in diameter. We measure their concentration with a number designated as the PM2.5 measurement (more is worse).

AQI levels and health risks

The main concern with PM2.5 particles is that they can work themselves deeply into the lungs (and even the bloodstream) causing lung and heart problems.

How to protect yourself

Filtration, Filtration, Filtration.

The ‘obvious’ filtration is to use a HEPA filter, but here are some thoughts:

1. Will a lower grade (MERV13 and up) work for you?

2. Is the filtration device pulling in enough air volume? This is measured in CFM or cubic feet per minute.

3. Does the filtration device filter air throughout your house?

Small devices with low airflow and the inability to flow air throughout the house may be less effective than high volume air filters with lower (and cheaper to replace) filters.

Wireless Relays

The iO-WR and iO-WRP are the perfect solution when you can’t run wire or existing wires have been cut or damaged. Both relays are rated for 1 Amp per channel, operate at a frequency of 915 MHz, 24VAC, 2.8VA with a base transceiver (3 receive / 1 send channels) and a satellite transceiver ( 1 receive / 3 send channels). The difference in receivers lie in their ranges.

The iO-WR can reach ranges of up to 100 feet, it is suitable for application in a typical residential installation such as replacing a broken wire running form a basement air handler up out to the backyard patio. 100 feet is plenty to pierce through standard residential wood framing and exterior siding.

The iO-WRP can reach ranges of up to 1/4 mile. This makes it the perfect solution for heavy commercial building materials such as cinder block, concrete, or corrugated metal roofs, or if the outdoor unit is on top of a commercial building several floors up. The ZP3-ESP is a 3 zone universal zone control panel that includes integrated EPS static pressure control logic designed to eliminate the need for a conventional bypass damper when used with 3-wire zone dampers. The panel is capable of handling up to 2 stages of conventional heating and cooling or 3 stages of heating and 2 stages of cooling for heat pump and dual fuel applications.

How ESP works

As zone dampers open and close, the ZPA-SPS Static Pressure Sensor continuously monitors the system static pressure. If the static pressure goes above the static pressure setpoint, the sensor will send a signal to the panel which will begin to open selected non-calling zone dampers slightly until the static pressure setpoint is maintained. The small amount of air allowed to bleed into non-calling zones eliminates air noise and assures proper airflow through the HVAC system. The static pressure setpoint is factory set at 0.4″ W.C. but it is fully adjustable from 0.08 to 1.2″ W.C.

These kits include the UT32 Titan Thermostat, a 20 VA transformer, and a 24V powered open / spring closed damper ranging from 4-10″ ducting. This highly universal control which allows for a fresh air damper to be wired to the thermostat eliminates the need for an additional control panel.

MUA-XX

These kits include a 20 VA transformer, adjustable static pressure sensor ranging from .08 to 1.2″ wc. and a 6-16″ damper. The adjustable static pressure sensor allows the contractor to calibrate when the make-up air damper opens, eliminating excessive unconditioned air in the home. The make-up air damper safely equalizes pressure with the home keeping unwanted and harmful gases from entering the living space due to negative pressure caused by exhaust fans.

For room cooling applications, the nozzle direction is not as important. Since the air conditioner is inside or near the space requiring cooling, you must duct out the warm air that the air conditioner produces. In an office environment this is typically done by ducting the condenser air from the top of the unit up to a special ceiling tile that directs the air to the main building cooling system’s return air plenum above the ceiling tiles. As the cool air from the unit offsets the heat being produced in the room, the temperature in the room will begin to drop. The capacity of the unit, the amount of heat being added to the room, and the size of the room will determine how much the temperature will drop.

Water Cooled Air Conditioners

Water-cooled portable air conditioners are intended to be rolled into a room near the source of the heat. They are intended for room cooling only. Water-cooled units cannot be ducted and do not use nozzles like their air-cooled counterparts. Since the air conditioner is inside the space requiring cooling, you must remove the heat that is produced by the air conditioner. Water cooled units use water instead of air to remove this heat. The unit requires a water supply, water return, and a place to drain condensate. As the cold air from the cooling side of the unit offsets the heat being produced in the room, the temperature in the room begins to drop. The actual temperature drop is determined by the capacity of the unit, the amount of heat being added to the room, and the size of the room.

8WC Series

The Koldwave 8WC Series represents the brand’s modern line of water-cooled portable air conditioners. They are explicitly designed for spaces where traditional air-cooled units won’t work because there is no way to vent hot condenser air (such as interior glass boardrooms, tight server closets, or historical buildings). Cooling capacity ranges from 12,060 BTU/hr with the 8WC12BE to 20,400 BTU/hr with the 8WC24BF.

What is the difference?

Both types of units are totally self contained air conditioners with refrigerant and compressors. Air conditioners need a way to reject the heat from the room. Air-cooled portables use air to reject the heat out of the room by ducting the unit above the ceiling tiles. A water cooled unit uses water to reject the heat. So, there has to be a water supply and a hot water return. This can be accomplished with a chilled water loop, condenser water loop, or process water lobby.
